Abstract

919,561. Sewing machines. EMSIG, S., EMSIG, J., and SUCHER, J. R., [trading as EMSIG MANUFACTURING CO.]. May 30, 1960 [June 24, 1959], No. 19020/60. Class 112. [Also in Group XXX] In a shank button sewing-machine the shanks S of buttons pass from a hopper into a gap 14 between front walls 12, 13 of a shoot having a back wall 11 engaging the heads H of the buttons. The lower end of the shoot is attached to a presser foot 18, on the lifting of which a finger 30 on a pivoted pawl 22 is advanced to engage the shank of a button B<2> and shifts the latter from a position in which the shank is releasably held by the curved nose 55 of a spring- biased pivoted pawl 45, to the sewing position in which it is held on an anvil A by spring fingers 16, 17. The button B<2> replaces the button B<1> initially in the sewing position, and a button B<3> slides downwardly till its shank engages the nose 55. The arrangement enables a range of buttons having different sized heads but shanks of uniform size to be fed. The distance between the leading edge 30a of finger 30 in the advanced or sewing position and the nose 55 is made equal at least to the difference between the diameter of the head of the largest button and the width of the shank. The finger 30 is arranged to enter the path of the button shanks at a position such that the distance between the edge 30a and the nose 55 is greater than the width of a shank but less than the diameter of the head of the smallest button. Pawl 22 is pivoted at 23 to one end of an arm 20, the other end of which is pivoted at 21 to the shoot. A spring 36 acts on pawl 22 to bias a stud 25 on arm 20 against the fixed head H<1> of the machine. When the presser foot is raised, arm 20 is thereby swung relatively to the shoot and a cam surface 31 on pawl 22 cooperates with a stud 35 on the shoot to impart the appropriate feeding movement to finger 30, an abutment 31a engaging stud 35 to stop finger 30 in the sewing position. Pawl 45 is pivoted at 46 to the shoot. A spring 48 acts on pawl 45 to bias a tail 52 thereon against an abutment 53 rigid with the shoot, and the nose 55 into the path of the shanks. Specifications 720,320 and 776,001 are referred to.
