Abstract
918,892. Making heat exchangers. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Jan. 12, 1961 [Jan. 29, 1960], No. 1389/61. Class 83 (2). A method of making a heat exchanger 20 from a seamless metal blank which has distended tubular passages 18 therein surrounded by solid web portions 19 comprises cutting the web portions between adjacent passages and separating the cut edges 24 and 25 sufficiently to alter the cross-sectional shape of the passages so as to increase their projection from the face of the blank. The cut edges 24 and 25 are separated by conventional means such as a tapered mandrel which simultaneously re-shapes the ] assages as at 23 so that the major dimension of the cross-section is transverse to the panel. The edges 24 and 25 form flanges 26 and 27 which may be used to mount secondary heatdissipating fins, or which may be folded over against the sides of the passages 23 to reduce their projection into the duct 22. The secondary fins may be strips of metal bent into serpentine form and secured by conventional means such as soldering or brazing. The crests of the folds of the secondary fins may be notched to assist in securing them. A plurality of the completed panels may be assembled face to face with the ducts 22 aligned or in staggered relationship. Alternatively the panels may be assembled face to face with the duets 22 aligned and secondary fins inserted which extend through all the panels. Specification 759,804 is referred to.
