A valve or shut-off device provided with means for automatically emptying the downstream pipe comprises a shut-off member 13 provided with radial ribs 30 which move in recesses in the valve housing. Each rib comprises two limbs which are radial extensions of the valve member 13 and are spaced apart and filled with an elastomeric material and the recesses of 42 are provided between the ribs and the shut-off member, thus allowing the lower portion 43 of the ribs to yield. With the shutoff valve in the closed position as shown, the ribs 30 uncover two outlets 24 to allow the fluid downstream of the valve to escape through a port in the housing (not shown) to a chamber 41 and through the outlet passages 24. When the shut-off valve is opened to allow flow through the pipe, the ribs 30 close the outlet passages 24. A diaphragm member 14 forming a cover for the shut-off member is clamped to the valve housing to prevent leakage.
