Abstract
918,836. Assembling force fits. PRETORIA MACHINERY WORKS (PROPRIETARY) Ltd. Nov. 15, 1961 [Nov. 18, 1960], No. 40806/61. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXIII] An improved wheel press for railway-wheel and axle assemblies includes two opposing hydraulic ram presses secured together or anchored in horizontally spaced relationship with respect to one another; a rigidly anchored anvil block assembly located between the presses and means to enable a wheel and axle assembly to be operatively positioned with respect to such anvil block assembly and the two rams of the presses and subsequently removed therefrom after completion of a pressing operation. The press is partly sunk in a pit 4 below floor level 5 and the anvil block assembly 6 is mounted on and anchored to horizontal bars 3. Provided on each end of the anvil block assembly is a slotted anvil block 7 the outer faces of which are arranged to provide stop means for the wheel bosses. Coacting with the axle blocks 7 are two pivotally mounted axle carrier members 9 and 10 actuated by hydraulic cylinders 19. The two parts forming the carrier member 9 are fixed closer together than the two parts forming the carrier member 10 to enable both their hooked portions to be accommodated one within the other so as to enable an axle to be lowered by one and thereafter engaged and raised by the other. Thus an axle assembly can be fed to the machine from one side and discharged from the other. The ram 21 of each press has a central bore 22 large enough to pass freely over the axle shaft so as to engage a wheel boss or an interposed collar. For pressing an axle free of the bore of a wheel a pivotally mounted anvil block 23, Fig. 3, is rotated until it covers the bore 22 of the ram. The axle shaft with two wheels loosely hung one on each end is rolled along rails 29 or 29a and on to the carrier members 10 or 9 respectively which are then lowered into the anvil blocks 7 whereupon the rams are operated to press the wheels on to the shaft. In a modification, Fig. 5, the wheel assembly is raised and lowered into position in the anvil blocks 7 by means of a cross bar 34 vertically reciprocable in guide members 35 by an hydraulic jack 33 located between the anvil blocks.
