Abstract
918,070. Welding by fusion. INSTITUTE ELECTROSVARKI IM E.O. PATON. Feb. 9, 1959, No. 4403/59. Class 83 (4). In electro-slag welding the maximum slag temperature is lower than the slag boiling point but is higher than the melting point of the metal being welded. In a machine for welding a vertical seam, electrode guides 6, Fig. 1, and feeding devices, melt retaining plates 5 and a flux hopper 7 having a valve 7a linked to the feeding devices are mounted on a carriage 2 moving along a vertical stand 11. The electrode guides 6 are reciprocated horizontally. Upward movement of the carriage 2 is automatically controlled in accordance with the level of the molten metal 10 as sensed by a member 9 on one of the retaining plates 5. Fig. 2 shows a similar machine for welding inclined plates. The electrode guide 6, Fig. 5, is provided with an adjustable member 14 which deflects the electrode as required. In a modification, Fig. 3, the stand 11 is dispensed with and the carriage is in two parts 2a on opposite sides of the work, spring-loaded towards each other and connected by a member 2c passed between the plates being welded. The carriage is raised by frictional engagement of driven rollers with the work. In a further modification, the carriage is raised by stepping magnets which engage the work. In a modified machine, Fig. 6, the retaining plates 5 and the electrode guides 6 are adapted to the welding of a T-joint between plates 12. Fig. 7 shows a machine having a non-consumable, e.g. graphite, electrode 16b, the weld metal being added in liquid or powder form from a vessel 17.
