Abstract

1312735 Welding by fusion PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 7 July 1970 [10 July 1969] 32878/70 Heading B3R In gas-shielded, single-sided, arc, buttwelding wherein a consumable electrode is fed from above to a gapped weld preparation, e.g. V or square shaped, and the gap is closed at the bottom side by a copper backing member, the electrode comprises slag-forming constituents containing, by weight of the electrode: 0À5-4% potash feldspar 0 -3% calcium carbonate 0 -2À5% zirconium oxide, the total of slag-forming constituents being from 1À5-8% by weight of the electrode, and the arc is directed entirely or substantially entirely to a position at the front of the molten pool. The welding is A.C. or, preferably, with the electrode positive, D.C. The shielding gas may comprise CO 2 , A, CO 2 or A containing mixtures, e.g. 80% A, 15% CO 2 , 5% O 2 , or He. As shown, for single root run welding, the copper backing member comprises a block 4 which is preferably grooved at 36. The block is placed in a holder 6 which is universally pivotally connected at 8, 12, 15 to an arm 16 extending through the welding gap and secured to a welding head 18. The holder is upwardly pressed by springs 20 to engage rollers 26 thereon with the workpiece components, the rollers projecting above the block 4 so that the latter is spaced slightly from the workpiece components. An electrically insulating layer 28, e.g. of mica, between the block and the holder prevents damaging current conduction via the rollers. The arc is preferably controlled by a known (and not described) automatic means which comprises two thermocouples in the block 4 and ensures correct arc-molten pool relation. For one or more tuns, the copper backing member may comprise a fixed strip. In addition to the above-mentioned components, the electrode may comprise, e.g., chromium, nickel, manganese.
