Abstract
918,049. Rotary burners. LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd., JOSEPH. Oct. 5, 1960 [Oct. 6, 1959], No. 33799/69. Class 75 (1). A liquid fuel combustion apparatus having a rotary combustion chamber 6 comprises a fuel atomizing cup 22 mounted in the inlet end of the combustion chamber for rotation therewith, a stationary fuel pipe 17 directing fuel into the cup and a shield 28 rotatable with and extending over the open end of the cup. The fuel is thrown off the rim of the cup and is ignited by spark-gaps formed between two lugs on the shield 28 and two conducting members 36 secured to the combustion chamber 6. The cup is secured to the combustion chamber 6 by arms 24. The fuel pipe 17 and an ignition lead 18 extend through a stationary tube 16 extending through a hollow shaft 12 secured to the inlet end of the combustion chamber and journalled in bearings 14. Air is admitted in pulses to the combustion chamber through valves comprising inlet holes in an end plate 8, closure members 9 fixed in spaced relation to the plate 8 and diaphragms 10 movable axially to co-operate with the inlet holes. The outlet end of the combustion chamber is secured to a hollow shaft 11 journalled in a bearing 13. Blades 33 on one end of the shaft draw cooling air therethrough. The combustion chamber is mounted within a duct 5 through which air to be heated is induced by a pair of impellers 15 on the shaft 12 and by helical fins 30 on the combustion chamber. The combustion gases pass through helical pipes 31 extending from the discharge end of the chamber through a rotary sealing member 32 mounted on the duct 5. The discharge pipes are shaped at their ends so as to impart rotation to the combustion chamber. At starting, the combustion chamber is rotated by a motor 34 connected to the shaft 11 through a clutch 35. Specification 918,047 is referred to.
