Abstract

917,955. Metal sheets bearing designs. KAPLAN CO., M. S. May 20, 1959 [Aug. 1, 1958], No. 17177/59. Drawings to Specification. Class 93. A metal sheet is coated with a thin coherent film of deformable thermoplastic resinous coating material, the coating is heated to fusion temperature and cooled, an ink design is printed thereon, and the coating is heated to below fusion temperature and embossed. The metal sheet may be of carbon or stainless steel, copper, or aluminium, and the coating material may be of natural or synthetic rubber (including butadiene-styrene and butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers and chloroprene and isoprene rubbers), chlorinated rubber, a polyester resin, polyvinyl chloride, a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinylidene chloride or vinyl acetate, polyethylene, or polytetrafluoroethylene. The last two substances may be applied by flame spraying, or organic solvent solutions or aqueous emulsions of the elastomeric materials may be applied by spraying, dipping, or painting. Pigments may be incorporated in the coatings. The metal sheet may be " Bonderized " (Registered Trade Mark) or Parkerized before coating. A steel sheet may be given a thin coating of polyvinyl chloride, subjected for a short time to a temperature of 450‹ to 700‹ F., cooled by passage round a watercooled roller followed by passage through the air to the original side of the furnace, given a second thicker coating of polyvinyl chloride and again subjected to a temperature of 450- 700‹ F., is cooled to 150‹ F. by spray nozzles, is offset-printed with a pattern in one or more colours (suitable dyes and pigments being specified), is reheated to 275‹ to 325‹ F. and is passed between water-cooled embossing rollers. The bottom roller may be smooth, in which case only the coating is embossed, or both rollers may be patterned, so that the metal sheet also is embossed, providing a coated sheet particularly adapted for drawing.
