Abstract

Coloured patterns are applied to films of organic thermoplastic material, e.g. polyvinyl chloride or polythene, by extruding a hot film of the material on to a backing member bearing, on that surface on to which the film is extruded, a colour-printed or other coloured pattern so that the film will pick up the pattern. Preferably heat is applied to the film-backing member assembly and light pressure may also be applied. The backing member is subsequently stripped from the film by winding-up on separate rollers or, in the case of a paper backing, by passing the assembly through an alkaline aqueous bath or by wetting the paper and brushing it from the film. If desired, a thin layer of paper may be left attached to the film to provide a suede effect. Instead of a paper backing, a metallic sheet which has been prepared to take a printed design may be employed as the backing member in the form of an endless band. The ink with which the backing member is printed must be compatible with the material of the film.
