Abstract
866,780. Coated paper; coated fabrics; seaming non-metallic sheet materials. COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA. June 4, 1957 [June 14, 1956; March 26, 1957], No. 17809/57. Drawings to Specification. Classes 42 (1), 96, and 140. [Also in Groups XVI, XX, XXIII and XXXVI] A coherent deposit is formed on a surface by electrophoresis (see Group XXXVI) from a dispersion in an electrically-insulating carrier liquid of a particulate material coated as by ball-milling with a control agent which effects maintenance of a chosen surface charge when the particles are suspended in the carrier liquid. Welding plastics.-Sheets of plastic arranged on a conducting former are joined together by such an electrophoretic deposition process along the gaps between the sheets using the former as the electrode to which the particles migrate. A suitable dispersion comprises methyl methacrylate in chloroform. The surface to be coated may form one electrode in the coating bath or may be disposed between positive and negative electrodes. For webs a roller or narrow bar over which the web passes may form one electrode, the other being a spaced rod or knife edge. Successive coatings may be applied by passing a web continuously through two deposition baths in tandem. Coated paper.-Separate sheets or webs of electrophotographic paper (see Group XXXVI) is produced by electrophoretic deposition of a coating from a dispersion in carbon tetrachloride of a paste formed by ball-milling together an alkyd resin (control agent), zinc oxide, yellow litharge, and cobalt and manganese driers in toluene. A web of carbon paper is similarly produced by deposition of a coating from a dispersion in carbon tetrachloride of a ball-milled paste of an alkyd resin, gas black, nigrosine and castor oil. A web of coloured paper is produced by deposition of a glossy red coating from a dispersion in toluene of a ball-milled mixture of epoxy ester resin, Toluidine Red and cobalt naphthenate in xylol. Patterns may be formed including more than one colour of pigment particles in the dispersing liquid, by varying the speed of the rollers feeding the paper web through the deposition bath, thus varying the coating thickness and intensity of colour, and by the use of shaped electrodes or masks to control the coating deposit. Coated fabrics.-Webs of leather, fabrics of wool, cotton, silk or plastic, or plastic sheets are coated in a manner similar to that described for paper with the difference that if the web is not sufficiently conductive the back of the web is coated with a material which makes it at least partially conductive, e.g. gelatine or silver chloride. By passage through separate treatment baths an adhesive and a granular material may be deposited in succession.
