Abstract

1,024,635. Selective printing. RANK XEROX Ltd. May 28, 1963 [June 15, 1962], No. 21242/63. Heading B6F. [Also in Division G2] Electrostatic printing.-An electrostatic printer comprises a conductive character electrode 12 with raised portions 13, a backing electrode 11 upon which is deposited solid electroscopic material 18 and means whereby a potential is applied across the electrodes so that a pattern charge causes the electroscopic material 18 to form an image on an insulating record 16, 17. The material 18 may be uniformly precharged and the backing electrode biased with a voltage of opposite polarity to the potential to move the material 18 from the backing electrode 11 to the electrodes 12. A negative pulse in the order of 600-2000 volts may be applied to the backing electrode or alternatively a positive pulse applied to the character electrodes. Carriers rotating during printing.-The characters 13 may be in annular rows on a drum 27, Fig. 3 (not shown), and the backing electrodes comprise belts 30 driven to move at the same speed as the drum or in steps for each complete line of printing. A contact 35 applies the potential. Characters formed by an assembly of dots or lines.-As indicated in Fig. 5 (not shown) the characters may be formed by a 5 x 7 mosaic. Inking arrangements.-The electroscopic material 18, known as toners having an average particle size of 4-10 microns may be used. Alternatively conductive particles may be used taking advantage of induced electrostatic charge. A further technique using carrier beads considerably larger than the toner particles may be used. The beads pick up the toner particles and impart a charge to them and are cascaded over the electrostatic image by virtue of the stronger electric field in the gap between the backing electrode and the character electrodes. In the case of the backing electrode being formed by belts 30, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), the beads are deposited thereon by an endless conveyer 42 having a series of buckets 43 dipping into material in a container 45.
