Abstract

Metal to be coated with insulating varnish is subjected to a strong electric field in order to remove gas or moisture from the surface and secure more complete wetting by the varnish. The metal may also be heated in gases, in a vacuum or in a liquid, or in the oil which is used as a varnish. The electrical treatment is preferably effected while the metal is immersed in the varnish. In the example, a wire to be varnished is earthed and is surrounded by a ring-shaped electrode within the oil. The electrode is surrounded by a solid insulating substance such as glass, and is brought to a high voltage preferably producing a field of greater strength than the testing field for the finished wire.
