681,230. Cathode materials and processing. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 14, 1950 [June 25, 1949], No. 14872/50. Class 39(i) An electron-emitting coating composition comprises 100 parts by weight of at least one alkaline earth carbonate, 1-10 parts of a binder comprising a polymer of acrylic acid esters, vinyl acetate or styrene or mixtures thereof and 150-500 parts of solvent, the coating being subsequently heated to remove the polymer and convert the carbonate to oxide. Polymers or copolymers of methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl or isobutyl methacrylate may be dissolved in benzine, toluene, nylene, or in diacetone or benzyl alcohol or in ethyl, anyl or butyl acetate in specified proportions, to which is added specified quantities of one or more carbonates of barium, strontium and calcium. The composition may be ball-milled screened and applied to the cathode by spraying, dipping or brushing. The coated cathode, when mounted in the tube, is activated by a surrounding furnace or by a heating current therethrough; decomposition of the resin into gases is completed at 350‹C whilst reduction of the carbonates commences at 825‹C whereby large pores in the coating are eliminated.
