Abstract

An adhesive composition comprises a mixture of a butadiene-methyl isopropenyl ketone copolymer and a polyvinyl resin or a chlorinated rubber. The composition may also contain a solvent for the copolymer and resin or rubber, a cellulose ester such as nitrocellulose, an incompletely condensed phenol-aldehyde or phenolketone resin, lime-hardened rosin, zinc resinate, and fillers such as carbon black, calcium silicate or zinc oxide, and curing agents such as sulphur, xanthates, or dithiocarbamates. The polyvinyl resin may be polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl acetal, or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinylidene chloride, or vinyl acetate. The condensation resin may be made from xylenol and formaldehyde utilizing an acid condensation catalyst. The solvent may be toluene, ethanol, methyl ethyl ketone, ethyl acetate, and mixtures. The compositions may be used for bonding surfaces of wood, leather, glass, plastic, and metal, e.g. duralumin, or as an adhesive in shoe-soling. Specifications 804,201 and 804,202 are referred to.
