Abstract
A quick-drying sprayable adhesive cement composition comprises 100 parts of a rubbery chloroprene polymer, 30 to 125 parts of a heat-hardening oil-soluble unmodified phenol-aldehyde resin and 15 to 65 parts of an additional tackifier resin of low acid number, the parts being by weight, dissolved in a blend of volatile liquid hydrocarbon non-solvent for the chloroprene polymer and a volatile liquid ester or ketone, the additional tackifier being compatible with the chloroprene polymer and soluble in the blend of volatile liquids. In the example, a milled base, obtained by milling neoprene with magnesia, zinc oxide and phenyl-a -naphthylamine and cutting the resulting sheet into small pieces, is dispersed in a mixture of petrobenzol and methylethylketone, and a phenol-aldehyde resin and zinc resinate are added with stirring until a uniform solution is obtained. Other solvent blends may be used, e.g. heptane, troluoil, naphtha and cyclohexane may replace petrobenzol, and acetone, methyl isobutyl ketone, ethyl acetate, n-butyl acetate and ethyl lactate may replace methyl ethyl ketone. The solvent blend may include one or more aliphatic hydrocarbons (including saturated cyclic hydrocarbons), and one or more esters or ketones in preferred proportions of 75 to 40 per cent of the former to 25 to 60 per cent of the latter. The phenol-aldehyde resins specified are the reaction products of p-tertiary butyl- and amyl-phenols with formalin. Other additional tackifiers specified are coumarone-indene resins, pentaerythritol ester of wood rosin and terpene resins. Pigments, antioxidants, fillers, &c., may be added. The products find particular use in bonding unplasticized natural rubber and plasticized synthetic polymers, such as butadiene-styrene and vinyl acetate-vinyl chloride copolymers, to metal, coated-metal, wood or other rigid supports, as in the bonding of synthetic rubber weatherstripping to lacquered or enamelled portions of car bodies. Specification 586,249, [Group V], is referred to.
