Abstract
Thermo-hardening mouldable compositions are made by intimately mixing a finely divided thermo-hardening resin with a filler, adding to the mixture a volatile wetting medium which is a solvent of the resin and is chemically inert with respect thereto, further mixing the mixture in a mixer having mechanical elements in relative movement between which the material to be mixed is compressed, and evaporating the wetting medium when the resin has been superficially fixed on the filler, but before hot moulding of the composition. Specified resins are phenoplasts. Specified wetting media are methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, acetone and the volatile solvent constituents of liquid phenoplast resins. Plasticizers, magnesia, accelerators for the resin, lubricants and pigments or colouring materials may also be added. In the examples: (1) and (2) a finely divided phenoplast resin, accelerator, plasticizer, magnesia, pigments and in (1) wood fibres; (2) textile fibres are mixed, the mixtures wet with (1) methyl alcohol, (2) ethyl alcohol and mixed to dryness; (3) a powdered urea-formaldehyde resin, plasticizers, accelerators and wood flour are mixed, water being introduced as a wetting medium and mixing continued to dryness; (4) a powdered phenoplast, plasticizers, accelerators, colouring materials and wood flour are mixed and wet with a liquid phenoplast which may contain two types of solvent: (a) aqueous which may contain free phenol and/or ethyl or methyl alcohol, the mixing being continued to dryness.
