Abstract

The coating for a sheet of material for printers' makeready (see Group XVI) comprises a flexible thermoplastic resin or cellulose derivative through which is uniformly distributed a sufficient amount of a puffing agent capable, on being heated, of increasing the thickness of the coating. In one example, the coating composition consists of 90 parts by weight of cellulose acetate butyrate, 90 parts of polyvinyl acetate, 39 parts of plasticiser (a sebacic acid ester type polymeric plasticiser containing no modifying oil), 500 parts of solvent (a mixture of 40 parts of toluene, 9 parts of ethanol, and 1 part of butanol) and 12.8 parts of a paste made by paint milling 2 parts of puffing agent, 2 parts of plasticiser and 1 part of solvent. The puffing-agent used is p,p1-oxy-bis(benzene sulphonyl hydrazide). In a second example the coating composition consists of 30 parts each of cellulose acetate butyrate and polyvinyl acetate, 12 parts of plasticiser, 12 parts of an epoxy condensation polymer of epichlorohydrin and bisphenol, 1.6 parts diethylenetriamine curing agent, 2.1 parts of puffing agent, and 165 parts of solvent. In a third example, the composition consists of 100 parts of polyvinyl butyral, 20 parts of plasticiser, 180 parts of toluene, 120 parts of isopropyl alcohol and 6 parts of puffing agent, while in a fourth example 35 parts of a hard polystyrene resin, 65 parts of toluene, and 1 part of puffing agent are used. For coating a sheet of material to be used for "bumping-up" electrotype plates the following compositions may be used: (1) 80 parts of epoxy thermosetting resin, 80 parts of cellulose acetate butyrate, 10 parts of epoxy curing agent (tri-(dimethylaminomethyl) phenol), 5 parts of puffing agent, and 220 parts of solvent, and (2) a similar composition but using only 3 parts of puffing agent and with the addition of 10 parts of a paste consisting of 16 parts of plasticiser, 16 parts of puffing agent, 4 parts of carbon black pigment and 36 parts of solvent.
