Abstract

917,717. Receivers. SIEMENS & HALSKE A.G. Aug. 15, 1960 [Aug. 21, 1959], No. 28202/60. Class 40 (4). In a telephone receiver of the ring armature type in which the air space 16 immediately behind the diaphragm 14 is coupled to a resonator to compensate for the diaphragm resonance, the diaphragm is of metal, and the volume of the air space 16 exceeds that of the air space 15 immediately forward of the diaphragm. The ring armature 11 is secured to the periphery of the diaphragm 14 which is made of a light alloy such as A1Mg5, the annular magnet 6 being provided with a polepiece 8 and an armature abutment 7, and an insulated packing ring 17 of polyethylene being inserted between the magnet 6 and the armature 11. The diaphragm 14 may be drawn forwardly with steep flanks and have a central portion in the form of a shallow rearwardly tapering frustum of a cone with upstanding outwardly extending corrugations 18 (Figs. 1, 4), or it may be in the form of a segment of a sphere (Fig. 3). In the latter case the packing ring 17 is so shaped as to reduce the volume of the air space 15 but not to obstruct the sound outlets 4 (Fig. 1). The packing member 9 has a single cylindrical aperture 12, of about 6 mm. diameter, which together with the air space 13 (Fig. 1) in the handset moulding constitutes the resonator coupled to the air space 16. In a modification (Fig. 4) the rear of the receiver is closed, the packing member 9 being replaced by a thin-walled housing 20 the interior of which forms the resonant cavity 13.
