Abstract

917,618. Drawing. VAUGHN MACHINERY CO. April 10, 1961 [Aug. 1, 1960], No. 12848/61. Class 83 (4). In a method of cooling wire on a drawblock a fluid coolant is circulated through the block to extract heat from the wall on which the wire is wrapped and the coolant is brought into direct contact with the wire. A wire drawing block comprises a base 1 and a drawblock 10 mounted on a shaft 7 supported in bearings 5 and 6. A plate 3 which carries the bearings forms with the base 1 a manifold 15 through which air under pressure passes to a gap 16 and flows over the flange 11 and sidewall 12 of the drawblock. The plate 3 also has a series of holes 17 through which air passes through tubes 20 to cool the bearings. Bolted to the plate 3 is a liquid coolant manifold 24 which has a series of orifices 26 therein through which jets of coolant are supplied into the pockets formed by webs 21 in the block. The coolant flows down the side wall 12 and either passes out through openings 27 in the drawblock to contact the wire directly or falls into a sump 28. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown), the lower side wall of the drawblock turns inwardly at a point just below the openings therethrough so that a pool of coolant collects to form a supply to pass continuously through the openings and cool the wire directly.
