Abstract

958,481. Air - cooled heat exchangers. HAPPEL G.m.b.H., [trading as GEA LUFTKUHLERGESELLSCHAFT HAPPEL G.m.b.H. & CO. KOMM.-GES.]. March 13,1963 [March 14, 1962], No. 9998/63. Heading F4S. An air-cooled surface condenser or fluid cooler comprises heat-exchange elements 2 cooled by a fan 8 beneath them, the fan motor 17 and transmission parts 18 lying within a housing 20 which supports the fan and is itself removably supported on a second structure mounted on the floor 1 and so constructed that the housing, motor, transmission and fan unit may be raised, lowered and removed from the heat exchanger without dismemberment of the second structure. As shown, the latter comprises two parallel walls 24a and 24b of concrete or masonry spaced by a distance greater than the smallest width of the housing. Horizontal feet 23 may support the housing 20 on top of the parallel walls, and, after rotation through 90 degrees the housing may be lowered between the walls to the floor (see Fig. 3). The second structure may alternatively comprise a single metal, upwardly tapering unit removably mounted on the floor. The housing 20 may be of sheet metal, of cylindrical or frustum shape and may have double walls enclosing sound insulating material 21. Lower and upper apertures 21b and 21a are provided through which air is drawn and expelled by an auxiliary fan 17a which cools the fan motor 17, the latter being suspended from a housing plate 19. A cowling 8a prevents excessive eddying of the cooling air. The axes of the motor and fan may be laterally offset from one another (Figs. 4 and 7, not shown) in which case a counterweight is provided to prevent instability when the unit is being lifted.
