Abstract

The invention comprises a process which involves growing the fungus Hypomyces solani in a culture medium containing a carbon source, a nitrogen source and the organic and inorganic factors ordinarily required for the growth of fungi in the presence of a 3-keto-D 4-steroid of the pregnane or androstane series to form a 3-keto-D 1,4-steroid of the pregnane or androstane series. By this method 17a - methyl-D 1,4-androstadien-3-one-17b -ol is prepared from the corresponding D 4-compound, D 1,4-pregnadiene-3,20-dione-17a ,21-diol is prepared from the corresponding D 4-compound, prednisone is prepared from cortisone, and 1-dehydrotestolactone of the formula <FORM:0917081/IV (b)/1> and 1-dehydrotestosterone are prepared from testosterone.
