3-Keto-D 1,4-steroids are prepared by growing the fungus Volutella ciliata in a culture medium containing a carbon source, a nitrogen source and other inorganic growth factors in the presence of the corresponding 3-keto-D 4-steroid such as testosterone or 17a -methyl-testosterone. The fungus belongs to the family Tuberculariaceae, and the order Hyphomycetales.
