Abstract

Electrically conducting varnishes comprise a resinous binder which upon curing shows a volume shrinkage of 0,5 to 5%, and silicon carbide of high volume resistivity. The resinous binder may be an oil-modified alkyd, an epoxy resin, a mixture of an epoxy resin and an oil-modified polyester resin containing an excess of carboxyl groups, a polyurethane resin or a silicone resin. The silicon carbide is ordinary abrasive grade silicon carbide. In a typical example a mixture of the solvent free epoxy resin, sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Araldite D", which has a volume shrinkage on curing of about 3%, an amine type curing agent and silicon carbide is cured at room temperature or at raised temperature. In another example a varnish comprises a linseed-oil modified alkyd, zinc chromate, iron oxide, silicon dioxide, silicon carbide and xylol. Specification 842,039 is referred to.
