Abstract
916,705. Belt gearing. MILLSPAUGH Ltd. Sept. 7, 1961 [Sept. 24, 1960], No. 32918/60. Class 80 (1). In a belt drive between a pair of rolls 1, 3, a belt 14 passes around a pulley 5 coaxial with and drivingly connected to fixed roll 1, around a fixed guide pulley 17, around a pulley 6 coaxial with and drivingly connected to movable roll 3, and around a guide pulley 16 which is adapted to move with the roll 3. Pressure applied at the nip is effected by pneumatically-operated bellows 24 at each end of the movable roll 3, a slide 25 on which the roll bearings 4 and pulley 16 are mounted being connected to an air cylinder 27 in order to move roll 3 away from roll 1 when the bellows pressure is released. The pulleys 4, 5 are tapered and drive their respective rolls through epicyclic gearing. In a modification, shown in Fig. 6, the guide pulleys 16, 17 are located on the opposite side of the roll pulleys 5, 6, the guide pulley 16 being carried by an arm 29, pivoted about the axis of the guide pulley 17. A tie-rod 30 extends between the end of the arm 29 and an upward extension 31 of the bearing housing 4 so that the pulley 16 partakes in the movement of the movable roll 3. Adjusting-means 32 in the tie-rod 30 facilitate adjustment of the tension of the belt 14. Spring means are provided for moving the rolls apart when the bellows pressure is released.
