Abstract

A tension-sensing dancer roller (4, Fig. 4) (for a web or warp which is liable to elongation or shrinkage while being treated in a sizing and drying machine, Fig. 1) is disconnected from a web tension regulating mechanism 29, when the web is stationary, so that deflection of the dancer roller due to elongation or shrinkage of the web is not transmitted to the regulating mechanism 29. The arms (18, Figs. 3 and 4) supporting the dancer roller (4) are fixed to a shaft 6, Fig. 2. A plate 7 is connected for rotation with the shaft 6, and carries a pneumatic cylinder 8. A slot 7a in the plate 7 longitudinally guides a slide 12 fastened to the piston rod 13 of the cylinder 8. Two segments 14a, 14b are pivotally mounted to the shaft 6, and are connected to the slide 12 by links 13a and 13b. Both segments 14a, 14b form a scissors acting on two bolts 15a, 15b projecting from a toothed segment 16 pivotally mounted to the shaft 6. The toothed segment 16 meshes with a pinion 23 mechanically geared to the web tension regulating mechanism 29 via chain and sprockets 26, 27, 28. In Fig. 2, with compressed air supplied to, the cylinder 8, the toothed segment 16 is fixed relative to the shaft 6, so that deflections of the dancer roller are transmitted to the regulating mechanism. When the web treating machine is stopped, the cylinder 8 is vented to atmosphere by a valve 39, whereby the segments 14a, 14b are opened to release the toothed segment 16 from the shaft 6. When the machine is restarted, a throttle 40 ensures that the piston 9 of the cylinder 8 is loaded slowly. The pneumatic operation of the segments 14a, 14b may be replaced by hydraulic, mechanical or electrical means. The rest position of the regulating mechanism 29 may be adjusted with respect to the toothed segment 16 by a clutch mechanism (30 to 33, Fig. 3) in the chain drive, to enable the apparatus to be used for various webs with differing properties. One or more of the above described web tension control systems is used to control the drive of the sizing rollers (2a) or drying drums (3) in the web treating machine (Fig. 1).
