Abstract

916,361. Variable-speed ratchet gear. USTAV PRO VYZKUM MOTORVYCH VOZIDEL. May 5, 1960 [May 6, 1959], No. 15935/60. Addition to 868,736. Class 80 (2). In a variable-speed ratchet gear similar to that shown in Figs. 3-6 of the parent Specification, the contact-pieces 3<SP>1</SP> are shaped to provide a uniform output speed for each transmission ratio and the tensioning means for the drive chains 3 are modified so as to increase the tension as the ratio is increased. The transmission comprises a driving crank-shaft 1 having four cranks with contact rollers 2<SP>1</SP> engaging the rigid contact pieces 3<SP>1</SP> which are attached to the chains 3 which engage sprockets 10 forming the driving members of ratchets on an output shaft 12. Each contact-piece 3<SP>1</SP> is pivoted at 4 to an adjustable support 5 and is shaped as shown to give a uniform output speed at each gear ratio. The free ends of the chains are secured at 90 to sprockets 15 which are freely mounted on a shaft 88 and are coupled in pairs, the chains 3 of each coupled pair being associated with cranks offset by 180 degrees and passing in opposite directions around the sprockets. The shaft 88 is adjustable along a rod 91 by means of a cam member 87 operatively connected to the shaft which is contacted by a roller 94 of an arm 95 adjustably mounted on a toothed segment 100 pivoted at 96 and meshing teeth 99 formed on the adjustable support 5 which pivots about pins 18. A rod 102 is pivotally connected to each contact-piece 3<SP>1</SP> and is biased by springs 106 which bear, through a carriage 107 and rollers 108 on a track 109 formed on the support 5. In the neutral (shown) and low ratio positions of the support 5, the carriages 107 of the tensioning devices bear against stops 111 on the support; on increasing the ratio the carriages abut fixed stops 110, and further movement of the support 5 displaces the carriages relative thereto and increases the loading of the springs 106 to increase the tension of the chains 3.
