Abstract

916,030. Impact-operable switches; magnetic switches. CATHODEON Ltd. July 15, 1959 [July 15, 1958], No. 22627/58. Class 38 (5). A switch which operates upon breakage of a frangible casing, by collision or crashing of aircraft or other vehicles, for example, comprises a glass envelope 1, a base seal 3 and a flange 2 with an insulating block 16 moulded therearound to carry terminals 15 connected to four or more rods 9. The ends of rods 9 are located in an insulating block 5 supported by a central pillar 4, contact eyelets 12 being provided as shown. An insulating block 18 slidable on pillar 4 and rods 9 carries bridging contact plates 28 and is urged by a spring 21 towards the contacts 12 but is held off by a stronger spring 23 as long as envelope 1 is unbroken. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 2 and 4) the frangible envelope 29 restrains an insulating piston 36 against a spring 38 such that ribs 37 prevent spring blades 34 from bridging rods 31. Each rod 31 has an L-shaped spring blade 34 mounted on it (Fig. 4) such that not only is contact made if the piston 36 is released or forced towards the base seal 32 but also if the switch is subjected to a sideways wrenching force. The frangible envelope may be evacuated or contain a gas such as nitrogen, hydrogen or argon. In a modification (Fig. 5, not shown), the switch is rendered flame-proof by replacing the moulded insulating base block by a mild steel housing filled with a silicone elastomer, the frangible envelope and a standard end connector being attached by a threaded ring and bolts, respectively. Magnetic operation.-The switch of Fig. 2 is provided with a soft iron slug 40 in the head of the piston 36 which renders it possible to actuate the switch for test purposes, without breaking the envelope, by means of a suitable solenoid or permanent magnet. Specifications 574,947 and 716,504 are referred to.
