Abstract
932,804. Retractive switches; switch cases. DOWTY ELECTRICS Ltd. Aug. 19, 1959 [June 14, 1958], No. 19102/58. Class 38 (5). A switch mechanism substantially as in Specification 685,332, is hermetically sealed and has its actuating member arranged to avoid excessive movement upon overtravel of the operating member. An actuating plunger 12 is slidable in a cylindrical extension 20 of the casing 1 and has a shoulder 19 and washer 21 to limit its movement to little more than that necessary to operate the switch contacts. A metal bellows 26 is brazed at its lower end to the plunger 12 and is soldered at its upper end to cylinder 20. A hat-like member 32 is screwed to the top of plunger 12 to slidingly fit over the cylinder 20 and is enclosed in a cage formed by member 34 (also sliding on cylinder 20) and a cap member 35 to which the operating force is applied. A spring 33 is pre-loaded between cap 35 and a flange on member 32 such that initial movement of cap 35 moves plunger 12 to operate the switch but any overtravel is absorbed by the spring 33. Springs 22 and 42 ensure retraction of the plunger 12 when the operating force is removed. A rubber cover 43 is sealingly secured to cage member 34 and cylinder 20 by metal clips 45 and 46. Preset adjustment of the switch operation is made by a bolt 24 and locknut 25. Magnets 7 and 8 reinforce contact pressure. Connecting wires 54 extend from the switch contacts to terminals 57 through glass seals 52 in a soldered end-plate 51. The space between the plate 51 and terminal block 55 is filled with a cold setting resin, and a rubber boot 61 having sleeves 62 for the connecting cables is clamped over the terminal block by a metal ring 63. The casing is filled with dry air through a hole 67 which is then closed by solder. Tubes 64 are brazed to the casing 1 to accommodate mounting bolts. The Provisional Specification refers to use on aircraft in exposed positions, for example, to indicate undercarriage operation, and also states that a small window is provided in the casing with a capsule of cobalt chloride therein to indicate sealing failure by changing its colour upon entry of dampness.
