Abstract
1,034,716. Gas blast switches. COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE. April 19, 1963 [May 26, 1962], No. 15486/63. Heading H2B. A circuit breaker comprises an enclosure 1 charged with gas such as sulphur hexafluoride under pressure and containing a movable contact 6 coupled to a plunger 14 movable in an aperture in the enclosure which aperture is closed by a resilient membrane 13, the plunger 14 being coupled to a locking and resetting device 17-19 the release of which permits opening of the contacts by the gas pressure on the plunger 14. The device comprises a magnetic piston 17 in a cylinder 4 and containing holding and releasing coils 18, 19, and an armature 23 engageable with the piston 17. The breaker is closed by first pressurizing space 20 above the piston to drive the latter downwards until the armature is attached and then venting space 20 so that piston and armature together are driven upwards by a spring 20. Under fault conditions coil 19 is energized in opposition to the holding coil 18 to release armature 23. Opening can alternatively be effected by deenergizing coil 18. The movable contact 6 is mounted on a cylinder 7 moving over a fixed piston 9 to drive gas through an insulating nozzle 11 to extinguish the arc. During closing a resistor (not shown) is inserted in a series with coil 18.
