Abstract

916,006. Pipe couplings. RESISTOFLEX CORPORATION. June 13, 1961 [June 20, 1960], No. 21342/61. Class 99(1). ). [Also in Group XXVI]. In a pipe line coupling the members 11, 12 to be coupled are drawn into engagement by an internally screw-threaded coupling nut 10 mounted for rotation on one of the members and co-operating with external screw threads 20 on the other member, and there is provision for effecting relative rotation between the nut and member 12 consisting of a gear-toothed element 25 on the member 12 and screwthreaded operating means carried by the nut for engagement with the element 25 when the nut and member 12 are in screw-threaded engagement. As shown, a split annular gear, or toothed segment 25 is secured in a channel 26 of the member 12, and the operating means comprises a transverse threaded spindle 29 journalled in a housing 31 of the nut 10, the spindle being arranged for tangential meshing with the gear 25 when the nut 10 and member 12 are screw-threadedly engaged; when the threads 30 on the spindle encounter the gear 25, rotation of the spindle advances the nut with respect to the member 12 until the members 11, 12 are about to compress the seal 21, a wrench then being applied to the spindle to continue advancement of the nut until the joint is fully assembled. A reduced portion 17 of the flange 15 on the member 11, allows the nut 10 a degree of eccentric freedom when the part 58 of the nut coincides with that portion and facilitates starting of the nut on the member 12. The seal 21 of hardened steel has a web portion 37 which is positioned in a channel provided by annular recesses 40, 41 in the ends of the members and a rigid portion 48 integral with a pair of diverging, annular resilient lips 49, 50 which form with the portion 48 concave surfaces, the lips, on full tightening of the joint, being deflected inwardly by frustoconical surfaces 52, 53 of the members. Soft metal annuli, e.g. of copper, may be disposed in dovetail section channels of the members and be engaged by the lips of the seal. The metal seal may be replaced by a known resilient seal of rubber.
