An electrically-insulated clamping-block 1 for holding down a rail 21 on a sleeper 20 wherein the block 1 is provided with one or more openings 2 for the passage of fixing bolts 27 and has along one side a recess 4 for fitting around the upper and lower edge of the rail base 5 to hold the rail 21 down and to resist transverse rail movement has a wear-resistant protector 10 provided at the recess 4 to resist wear caused by relative movement between the rail 21 and the block 1. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the block 1 is held down by a nut 30 bearing on a washer 31 and the bolt 27 engages in an insulating sleeve 28 screwed in the sleeper 20. The protector 10 may terminate at the front edge of the block instead of extending part the way up as at 15 and as shown. In a modification shown in Fig. 11, the block 1 is provided at its side remote from the recess 4 with a protector heel-plate 40 which bears against an abutment provided by a recess in the sleeper top for the foot of the rail 21. In this embodiment, the block 1 is reinforced by a metal plate 45 secured by rivets 47 to the protector 10. The block 1 is held down by a nut 30 bearing on a spring washer 68 contained within and bearing on a cup-shaped member 65 in turn bearing on a pad 60 which yields more readily than the rest of the body of the block 1. The pad 60 may be integral with or separate from the block 1 and may be provided a regular array of cylindrical or frusto-conical projections. Specifications 865,119 and 865,120 are referred to.
