Abstract

869,666. Fastening railway rails. TIPPETT, S. March 24, 1959 [April 8, 1958], No. 11063/58. Class 104 (2). In a rail clip formed from a single piece of strip metal bent to form two facing leaves 1, 2, the longer leaf 1 of which engages the top of the rail base 4 and the shorter leaf 2 abuts the side 4a of the rail base, the longer leaf 1 is curved locally to form a ridge 10 or depression 45 extending across the whole width thereof and. the ridge 10 or depression 45 is provided with one or more openings 11 aligned with one or more openings 12 in the shorter leaf 2 for the reception of a fixing bolt or bolts. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 10 the clip is held in position by a nut 35 engaging a saddle piece 20 bearing on the upper leaf 1. An intermediate member, Figs. 3 and 9 (not shown), may be inserted between the nut 35 and the leaf 1. The lower leaf 2 rests on a resilient pad 31 fitting in a recess 32 in the top of a concrete sleeper. The corners at the free end of the leaf 2 are raised at 16 to form abutments. The lower leaf 2 may be formed with a ridge which may be bent in the same or opposite direction to the ridge formed in the upper leaf 1, Figs. 5 and 7. The upper arm 1, during the passage of a train, bends about the edge 23 of a saddle piece 20 until the edge 4a of the rail base engages the leaf 1 when further upward movement is resisted by the saddle piece 20 the upward movement of which is resisted by a rubber insulating sleeve 34 mould-bonded to the fixing balls 15. In a modification shownin Fig. 12 a saddle piece 50, made of an electrically insulating material, such as hard rubber, nylon or ebonite, is integral with a sleeve 41 which enters the holes in leaves 1 and 2 of the clip and surrounds the bolt 15. The bolt 15 in this case has a " Tee "-shaped head 53 which engage beneath a plate 55 embedded in the sleeper 30. Specifications 865,119 and 865,120 are referred to.
