914,992. Percussion fuzes for projectiles. ANSTALT FUR DIE ENTWICKLUNG VON ERFINDUNGEN UND GEWERBLICHEN ANWENDUNGEN ENERGA. Jan. 13, 1961 [Jan. 29, 1960], No. 1459/61. Class 9 (1). A percussion fuze for a hollow charge projectile comprises a plate 25 of light metal supported peripherally by a crushable ballistic cap 22, 23, and a member 32 housing a striker 26 and detonator 35. A safety device comprises an inertia block 29 having flexible tongues 30 which engage segments 28, which segments are subject to a radially outward pressure due to a spring 33. On launching, the projectile is armed by setback of the block 29 and consequent movement of segments 28 free the path of central portion 27 of the plate 25. According to the invention, on impact with the target, including impact at large angles of incidence, the ballistic cap 22 is deformed, a collar 34 of hard material such as case-hardened steel attached to plate 25 grippingly engages the target and continued movement of the main body of the projectile due to its momentum causes the striker 26 to be driven into the detonator 35. Numerous embodiments are described. The plate 25 may be supported by a cone similar to that at 36, the complete fuze mechanism being housed and protected by the cap. The collar 34 may be external to the cap, particularly in the case of armour piercing projectiles, and the striker 26 may be integral with plate 25, the detonator 35 moving towards the striker against the action of a spring on impact of the projectile. A relay-detonator may be supported independently and behind the detonator 35 so that the former will remain axially positioned should the latter be laterally displaced on impact. An arrangement is also described for easy withdrawal of both detonators and the striker as a unit. The fuze is described as suitable for hand- and rifle-grenades, incendiary projectiles and rockets.
