Abstract

Detergent and shampoo compositions comprise (a) an organic anionic or non-ionic detergent and (b) haloalkyl pentachlorophenyl carbonate having the formula <FORM:0914891/III/1> where R is a mono- or poly-haloalkyl group of 1-8, preferably 1-5, carbon atoms. (a) may be a soap; a synthetic anionic detergent such as an alkylaryl sulphonate, alkyl sulphate or sulphonate, fatty acid glyceride sulphate, N-fatty acyl tauride, or a sodium salt of a sulphomethyl ester of a saturated C12-18-aliphatic carboxylic acid, of didialkyl ester of sulphosuccinic acid, or of the corresponding N-alkyl amide; or a non-ionic detergent, such as an alkylene oxide condensate with an alcohol, amide, amine, carboxylic acid, alkylphenol, aralkanol such as benzyl alcohol, aralkenol such as cinnamyl alcohol, or tall oil. The carbonate ester is normally present in an amount of 0,1-10% by weight of the detergent, but in shaving creams and toilet soaps rather more than this may be present. Dye, perfume, water softeners, and fillers may also be incorporated. A suitable shampoo comprises triethanolamine lauryl sulphate, methyl cellulose, propylene glycol, potassium stearate, 2-chloroethyl pentachlorophenyl carbonate and water. An antiseptic detergent contains a tall oil-ethylene oxide condensate, sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, sodium tripolyphosphate and sulphate, and 2-chloroethyl pentachlorophenyl carbonate. A shaving composition consists of potassium stearate, glycerol, cetyl alcohol, and 2-chloroethyl pentachlorophenyl carbonate. U.S.A.
