Abstract

913,972. Tobacco-feeding apparatus. QUESTER, W., [trading as QUESTER, W. [Firm of]]. Dec. 10, 1959 [Dec. 10, 1958], No. 42104/59. Class 130. [Also in Group XXX] Tobacco is supplied cyclically to a series of cigarette machines in accordance with the consumption of tobacco by the machines via a series of continuously driven supply conveyer belts 1-10, the belts 7-10 having bridging plates 11-13 which are arranged between adjacent ends of the belts and are pivoted downwardly in predetermined sequence to deliver predetermined maximum quantities via shoots 20 to charging belts 14-16 which deliver to charging tables 17-19 of the machines. The actual quantity delivered to each machine, however, is determined by detector mechanism (not shown) associated with each machine and which returns the bridging plates to bridging position when the machine has received sufficient tobacco for a cycle of operations. In the intervals of time between the return of one bridging plate and the lowering of the next the tobacco is fed to storage belts 21, 22 on which it accumulates until the tobacco breaks a beam of light impinging on a photo-cell 23, upon which the belts 1-4 are stopped and subsequent feeding of tobacco is from the storage belts until the latter are empty whereupon the photo-cell is actuated by the light beam to re-start belts 1-4. Each hopper 20 is pivoted at its upper end about a horizontal axis transverse to the associated charging belt and is oscillated so that its lower end reciprocates longitudinally of the charging belt to distribute the tobacco over the latter.
