Abstract

913,804. Reverse gears. TWEEDALES & SMALLEY Ltd. March 15, 1961 [March 21, 1960], No. 10016/60. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group IX] Drive from a constantly-rotating input shaft 9 may pass to an output shaft 8 by one of three paths, the path depending on which of the three electromagnetic clutches 13, 14, 54 is energized. When clutch 13 is energized, the drive passes by belt drive to shaft 101 having a gear 11 thereon to drive a gear 12 on the input side of clutch 13; the drive then passes via bevel gears 141, a worm and wormwheel 15 to the output shaft 8. If 14 is the clutch energized the drive passes from shaft 101 through this clutch, through gear 16 and a reversing gear 161 to the gear 17 and bevel gears 141 as before. An alternative reverse gear is obtained when clutch 34 is energized in which case the drive passes by a belt 44 through this clutch and further belts and pulleys to the disengaged output side of clutch 14. A freewheel may be incorporated at 10 so that the higher reverse gear may be switched in without disengaging clutch 14. In Figs. 2 and 3 a differential arrangement is shown whereby a disc 20 is oscillated in accordance with the motion of a shaft 8 and at the same time rotated relative to its shaft 33 by the rotation of a pick wheel 27 which is picked by a suitable linkage in accordance with the oscillation of the disc 20. The disc 20 is loosely mounted on its shaft 33 on which is also mounted a ratchet-wheel 40 and gear 39 fixed relative to each other but rotatable relative to the shaft, a gear 37 fast upon the shaft, a gear 32 rotatable relative to the shaft and a gear 19 by which the shaft is driven from the shaft 8 via the gear 18; the gear 32 has fixed thereon a stud 34 having a double pinion 36, 38 rotatable together relative to the stud. Motion is passed from gear 19 to disc 20 via gear 37, pinion 36, 38, gear 39 and ratchet-wheel 40 and a pawl 41 mounted on the disc, the disc being biased in one direction by a weighted rod 21 so that rotation from ratchetwheel 40 to disc 20 can be conveyed in either direction. The additional rotation is conveyed from pick 27 through worm and wheel 31 and a further gear to gear 32 which then rotates relative to shaft 33 and gear 37 to induce a rotation in the double pinion and so drive the gear 39 and ratchet-wheel 40.
