[Also in Group XVIII] In order, for example, to maintain horizontal a sighting line, a mirror 4 is carried by a pendulum 1 which is suspended by wires or metal tapes 6 from a fixed support 5. To prevent transverse vibrations arms 9 on the pendulum have screws 10 with end recesses carrying balls or knife edges which bear against the support 5 and are in line with the axis of articulation X-X<SP>1</SP> defined by the wires or tapes 6. In a modification the balls or knife edges are mounted on slides which can be clamped to the pendulum in such positions that the balls or knife edges are in line with axis X-X<SP>1</SP>.
