A shoe-making machine, e.g. a shoe bottomlevelling machine, has a support including a pin 28 which enters the thimble 30 of the last, and a member 56, 57 which engages the inverted cone face of the supported last, and mechanism to move the member upwardly, at conclusion of the machine operation, to move the last upwardly until it is free of the last pin, and then to move the member and last laterally of the support. The mechanism is described in application to a twin shoe bottom-levelling machine having two supports and two releasing means, each support including a heel support, as shown, a toe support, an intermediate support, and a toe gauge. The twin releasing mechanisms, shown respectively in Figs. 5 and 6, include last-engaging plates 56, 57, which are flanged at 58, 59, and mounted beneath the heel ends of the lasts on slides 64, 65. The latter are slidably mounted between surfaces 68, 70, and are guided laterally by rolls 80 (not shown), 81, and 82, 83 and by fixed rolls 76 engaged in slots 74 therein. The slides are moved by levers 91, 97 which are linked at 103 for equal and opposite movement by hydraulic means, and have open-ended slots 88 (not shown), 89, engaging rolls 86 on slides 64, 65. Thus, when levers 91, 97 are turned the slides 64, 65 are first moved linearly, guided by rolls 76, 80, 81, 82, 83 and raising the lasts and shoes clear of pins 28, until rolls 76 engage the lower ends of slots 74 and the lower ends of the slides are clear of rolls 81, 83, when the slides are pivoted about rolls 76, removing the lasts and shoes into receptacles 150, as shown in Fig. 6. The hydraulic system includes a fluid-operated piston controlled by spring-returned valves which are actuated by a solenoid under control of a switch.
