Abstract
996,559. Boots &c. S. ASHWORTH. March 12, 1964 [April 26, 1963], No. 16435/63. Heading A3B. An article of footwear, e.g. a slipper having a fabric or felt upper, is blocked by placing it on a perforate last 23, steaming it by applying steam under pressure to the interior of the last and then drying it by applying suction to the interior of the last. The last 23 is a hollow expansible last having a fixed forepart 28 and a movable heel part 30 which has a hollow spigot 31 which slides in a socket in the forepart 28 to provide a passage for steam and suction. The heel part 30 is moved by the piston rod 35 of a pneumatic ram 36 via levers 34, link 33 and lever 32. The interior of the last is connected by a passage 25 to the upper chamber 13 of a steam box 10. Steam is circulated through the lower chamber 14 by pipes 17, 18 and a valve 15 controls the flow of the steam to the last. Suction is applied to the upper chamber 13 by a pipe 20 and is controlled by a valve 21. During the blocking operation the sole of the shoe may be pressed against the last by a pressure pad 43 which is operated by a ram 46. The apparatus described has two lasts for blocking a pair of shoes simultaneously.
