Abstract

1482082 Shoe and lasting machines BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO 21 Oct 1974 [20 Oct 1973 5 June 1974] 48991/73 and 24866/74 Heading A3B A shoe upper conforming lasting machine has a pair of gauges arranged on opposite sides of a shoe assembly and operated sequentially to engage the shoe and position it correctly within the machine. In one form, the shoe assembly is mounted upon a pin 10, Fig. 1, between gauges or pads 508, 509 (see also Fig. 2). Pneumatic servos 522, 523 are operated one after the other, depending upon whether the shoe is for a left or right foot, to pivot the pads 508, 509 upwards about pins 514 and into engagement with the forward sides of the shoe assembly. One servo, e.g. the servo 523, is fed with high pressure air, to raise its pad 509 to the vertical position, and the other servo 522 with low pressure air, so that its pad 508 engages the shoe assembly, gently pushes it against the pad 509, and thus correctly aligns the shoe &c axis. Selection of which servo 522, 523 is operated first is manual. When the shoe assembly has been aligned as described, a toe-engaging plate 68 on a servo actuated lever 52 and a toe pad 72 engage the shoe assembly, and the gauges or pads 508, 509 are withdrawn so as not to impede subsequent wiping operations. In a modified form in which selection of the sequence of operation of the pad servos 522, 523 is automatic instead of manual, a sensor finger 620, Fig. 3, pivoted on a pin 622 by a servo 626 and carried on the lever 52 actuates a control valve or switch 634. The servo 626 is actuated to swing the sensor finger 620 perpendicular to the main axis of the shoe assembly, &c. The machine is set to operate on a right-hand shoe, in which case the servo 522 is supplied with high pressure air, the servo 523 with low pressure air, and the finger 620 pivots in to the end of its stroke without contacting the shoe assembly, &c. If, however, a left-hand shoe, &c is being lasted, the sensor finger 620 engages the shoe, &c, and the switch device 634 changes the control circuit to supply low, instead of high, pressure air to the servo 522 and high, instead of low, pressure air to the servo 523.
