Abstract

1,063,261. Lasting machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. Nov. 27, 1963 [Aug. 29, 1962], No. 33082/62. Heading A3B. A shoe upper conforming machine has a wiper arrangement at an operating station of the machine, a support for the last movable between the operating station and a loading station, clamps for clamping the shoe upper against opposite sides of the last at the loading station, grippers in the vicinity of said opposite sides to tension the upper against the last at the loading station, the construction and arrangement being such that the grippers are caused to release the upper and retract to out of the way positions prior to movement of the support towards the operating station, the clamps moving towards the operating station with the support and maintaining the upper in tensioned condition while the wiping operation is performed. As described the heel seat and waist lasting machine of Specification 1,040,882 is modified by the addition of grippers at the loading station of the machine. The grippers are carried by a bar 8 which is pivoted to the machine frame at 6 and is moved from an out of the way position to an operative position at the loading station by a pneumatically operated piston 16 and cylinder 14. The bar 8 is positioned heightwise by a stop pin 30 engaging the insole I and during downward movement of the bar 8 pins 34 carried by the bar 8 engage the clamps 2 to position the clamps 2 according to the insole level. The gripper jaws 52 are carried by arms 54 which are pivoted to the bar 8 at 56. The gripper jaws 52 are closed by wedge-shaped pistons 60 in cylinders 58 in the arms 54, and are raised to tension the upper by pistons 76 in cylinders 74 engaging pins 68 carried by the arms 54. The gripping mechanism has a pneumatic control circuit (which is separate from the hydraulic control circuit of the abovementioned Specification) and operates as follows:-on actuation of a lever 12 the grippers are moved from their out of the way position towards the shoe; the clamps 2 being positioned by this movement, and a piston 92 in a cylinder 36 operates a spool 42 of a valve 40 to operate the clamps 2. On actuation of a foot actuated valve 70 the gripper jaws are closed and the grippers are elevated to tension the upper. On release of the foot actuated valve 70 the grippers are opened and the bar 8 is raised to move the grippers to their out of the way position. The jack can then be moved rearwardly from its loading station to last the shoe as described in Specification 1,040,882.
