Abstract

912,580. Sleeve couplings. BURNDY CORPORATION. Jan. 2, 1961, No. 16/61. Class 38 (1). [Also in Group XXV] In a connector comprising a malleable metal barrel 401 for connecting wires or cables such as electrical wires 410b endto-end and having a wire stop 402 and a circumferential groove 403 into which snaps locating bead 406 of a coaxial insulating sleeve 404 slipped over the barrel 401, each wire 410b is inserted in the barrel up to the stop 402 and held in position, whilst the barrel is crimped, by a gripping disc 1 having radial slits such as 2 . . . 7, Fig. 1, so as to form tabs 11 . . . 16 which dig into the wire insulation 411. The centre hole 8 of the disc has two different radii 9, 10 so that small diameter a d large diameter wires may be gripped by the said tabs, and the tab ends may be arcuate as at 17 or straight, or may have a jagged edge (Fig. 2, not shown) for gripping non-insulated wires. The gripping disc, e.g. of sheet-metal, may have a sidewall, and a lip which is held between the end of sleeve 404 and an end cap 409 which snaps on to the end of the sleeve as shown. Sleeve 404 may be omitted (Fig. 5, not shown), in which case the gripping disc is fastened in the end of the metal barrel, e.g. by staking.
