[Also in Group XXIV] Means for imparting an alternating rotary motion or a continuous rotation to the drum of a washing-machine comprises a motor-driven shaft 1, two auxiliary shafts 2, 3 driven in opposite directions by the shaft 1, sleeves 7 and 8 freely journalled on the shaft 1, means for imparting to the sleeve 7 a reciprocating motion along the shaft 1 so that the sleeve 7 is coupled successively with one and then the other of the auxiliary shafts 2, 3, means for sliding the sleeve 8 between two extreme positions along the shaft 1 so that the sleeve 8 is coupled to the sleeve 7 or to the shaft 1 or is free, and means (26) on the sleeve 8 for driving the washing drum. The sleeve 7 is reciprocated along the shaft 1 by means of a crank-shaft 36 adapted to engage alternately with clutch-plates 19 and 20 and move them into and out of driving engagement with pulleys 15, 16. These pulleys are freely mounted on the shaft 1 and are rotated in opposite directions by being coupled by belts 31, 32 to pulleys 13, 14 on the auxiliary shafts 2, 3. Shafts 2, 3 are connected through pinions 27, 29 and shafts 1, 2 are connected by a belt 30 and pulleys 11, 12. Rotation of crankshaft 36 is effected through pinions 9, 10 and gearing 34, 35. The ends of sleeve 8 carry clutch-plates 23, 24 for driving engagement with plates 21, 25 on the sleeve 7 and shaft 1, respectively. Longitudinal movement of the sleeve 8 may be controlled manually or by a timer. The shaft 1 constitutes the shaft of an electric drive motor and its opposite end carries the vanes of a pump for the washing-machine.
