Abstract

861,917. Washing-machines. ELECTROLUX A.B. Feb. 20, 1959 [Feb. 21, 1958], No. 5909/59. Class 138 (2). In a horizontal rotary drum-type washing- machine, at least one end wall 35 of the drum 27 is releasably fastened to a part-circumferential wall 29, and the drum has means for automatically coupling it to a driving member on movement of the drum into position in an outer housing (not shown). The housing has an upper hinged cover with an opening for insertion of a water supply line. A valve prevents emergence of foam through the opening. A channel-shaped clip member 50 on one end wall 35 slidingly engages with an arm 51 rigidly secured to an axle 52, the drum being retained in position by a spring-pressed bolt 61 engaging in a sleeve 60 on the arm 51. The end walls 35 are secured by means of nuts 45 screwed on to rods 41. , An opening 31 in the wall 29 has a cover 32 hinged on pins 33 and held closed by spring-pressed bolts 36. A motor 16 (Fig. 5), is connected by a belt 74 and pulleys 73, 75, and a worm drive (not shown) to a shaft 77 on which a pulley 59 is freely rotatable. The pulley 59 can be coupled to the shaft 77 by a coupling device 79 and is connected by a V-belt 58 (Fig. 2), to a pulley 57 on the drum axle. A microswitch 82 operated by a drive 80, 81 periodically reverses the motor 16, thus producing oscillatory rotation of the drum 27. The coupling device 79 is controlled by a yoke 92 pivoted at 93 and provided with a roller (Fig. 6, not shown), engaging a slot in a cam. The cam also engages a roller carried by a drain pump 22 pivoted at 86. By means of a control knob the cam can be pivoted to uncouple the drive to the drum 27 and move the pump against spring action so that a friction drive wheel 98 for the pump engages the pulley 75.
