[Also in Group XIII] In a tumbler-type washing-machine comprising a drum 3 rotatably carried by two supporting rollers 6, 7, one roller (7) is associated with a stand 4 and the other (6) with a driving set 1 comprising a motor 2 and at least one reduction gear, the driving set 1. is detachably connected to the stand 4 and the drum 3 is loosely placed on the rollers 6, 7 of the assembled units, the length of the roller 6 being substantially equal to the width of the cylindrical rolling surface of the drum 3. General arrangement.-The washing drum 3 may be removed and a drying drum (Fig. 10, not shown) supported on the rollers and used in conjunction with a drying blower (see Group XIII). The drive rollers 6, 7 may be used for wringing the clothes (Fig. 8). The stand 4 may be hung on a wall with the roller 7 serving to support the drum 3 when not in use. In the example, the driving set comprises two rollers 5, 6 pressed against each other and rotated in opposite directions. The arrangement is such that alternately one roller and then the other engages the drum so as to impart an oscillatory motion to the drum, reversal of rotation taking place after about three revolutions. A flange 9 on the drum 3 is adapted to engage an annular slot in each of the rollers (as 39 in roller 5) to prevent sideways movement of the drum. The drum has three perforated lifters, one of which contains an electric element for initial heating of the water (Fig. 6, not shown) . Drive mechanism (Fig. 4).-The motor 2 is connected by a belt and pulleys to a worm axle 14 driving a worm-wheel 15. The wheel 15 is connected through a clutch 48, 49, axle 43, chain wheels 19, 21 and a chain 20 to means for driving the roller 6. The wheel 15 also drives a worm 18 and worm-wheel 23, and a cam disc 24 bearing against a wheel 27 which is carried by a pin 31 rigidly connected to an arm 28 pivoted at 29. The pin 31 passes through a hole in a lever 32 carrying pins 34 which engage a casing 37 surrounding the rollers 5, 6. When the wheel 27 moves on to the high part 25 of the cam 24, the casing 37 is rocked about the axis of the roller 6 so that the roller 5 supports and drives the drum. When the wheel 27 is on the low part 26 of the cam, the roller 6 supports and drives the drum. Each time the roller casing 37 is rocked to change the rotation of the drum 3, the clutch 48, 49 is disengaged by means of pins 56, 57 carried by the wheel 23. These pins engage an arm 55 connected to a clutch-operating fork 54 pivoted at 53. The drive to the roller 6 is through a sleeve 93 carrying the chain-wheel 21 one end 94 of the sleeve 93 having a diametrical slot with a central bore designed to receive a stud 95 and vane 96. The vane 96 acts as one member of a dog clutch by engagement with a slot in the end of the roller shaft 38, the clutch being disengaged against the action of a spring 98 by means of a handle 97. The drive mechanism is housed in a casing the bottom 80 of which has grooves 81 adapted to engage the side pieces 82 of the stand 4. Locating pins 85 may be provided on the side pieces 82 and rubber heels 84 for mounting the stand 4 on a bath tub. The end walls of the casing 37 are provided with stub sleeves 91 adapted to be supported in open topped bearing sockets 78 on the casing 70, 71 of the drive mechanism. Wringers.-By withdrawing the vane 96 the rollers 5, 6 and their casing can be removed from their mounting on'the driving set casing 70, 71 and remounted in the inverted position shown in Fig. 8 for use as a wringer. The clothes are fed between the rollers 5, 6 through an opening 103 in the casing 37, the wringer being operated by means of a crank 106 provided with a clutch vane 109 for connection to the roller 6. The crank 106 is mounted in a bearing 105 secured in place by a screw 107. The downwardly facing wall of the casing 37 may be perforated to facilitate drawing of the water.
