Abstract

738,324. Washing-machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 17, 1953 [March 17, 1952], No. 7342/53. Class 138(2). A washing-machine comprises an agitator 7 mounted on a lay shaft 16 within a wall 13b of a tank, and drive mechanism for the agitator located within a recessed portion 13c of the wall 13b and comprising a sun gear 14 fixedly mounted on a fixed shaft 11 extending through the recessed wall, a gear case 8 adapted to rotate about the shaft 11, and a planet pinion 15 keyed to the lay shaft 16 and meshing with the sun gear 14, rotation of the gear case causing the planet pinion to drive the agitator so that any point on the periphery of the agitator will describe an epicycloidal path. The gear case 8 is mounted on bearings 9, 10 on the shaft 11 and is closed at the rear by a back plate 22. A disc part 4 prevents clothes entering the recess 13c. A pulley 21 connected to the gear case through a coupling 23 is drivingly connected to a motor (not shown). The motion of the agitator 7 may be continuous or oscillatory depending on the mechanical control provided from the motor.
