833,665. Washing machines. BAUKNECHT G.m.b.H., G. Aug. 10, 1956 [Aug. 16, 1955], No. 24600/56. Class 138 (2). An agitator 2 is mounted on a crank 4 or eccentric so as to be movable bodily in an orbital path whilst being maintained in the same general orientation, and means are provided to vary the eccentricity of the crank or eccentric to vary the orbital path of the agitator. As shown, the agitator 2 is mounted on a pin 3 on the crank 4 and is peripherally held by means of a rubber or like flexible sheet 7 which is attached at its circumference to the inside of the washing vessel. Alternatively the machine may be provided with one crank for imparting orbital motion to the agitator and another crank for maintaining the same general orientation of the agitator. The crank-pin 3 is carried by a toothed element 3<SP>1</SP> inserted into an eccentric and toothed recess in the crank 4, thereby permitting adjustment of the eccentricity of the pin 3 in relation to a driving shaft 5. Alternatively the crank-pin 3 may be carried by a block slidably disposed in a radial keyway in the crank, and connected with a control rod whereby the eccentricity of the crank-pin 3 can be varied from zero to a maximum by manual or automatic means. The arrangement may be such as to permit a gradual increase in the eccentricity of the crank-pin and therefore a gradual intensification of the washing effect. While the agitator 2 is executing its orbital motion the flexible sheet 7 is being flexed and thereby transmits a pulsating action to the wash liquid.
