Abstract
911,706. Welding by fusion. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 12, 1961 [Jan. 21, 1960], No. 2322/60. Class 83 (4). A thin-walled tubular member 5 is joined to a surrounding member 8 by mounting a close fitting sleeve 6 on the tubular member 5, the sleeve 6 being several times as thick as the tubular member 5 and being connected to or integral with the surrounding member 8, and forming an annular fusion weld 10 remote from the ends of the sleeve 6 and penetrating to the surface of the tubular member 5. The tubular member 5 is a stainless steel tube enclosing a cable 4 passing through the surrounding member 8 which is part of a pressure vessel. The weld 10 is formed by an argon shielded tungsten arc. The sleeve 6 is clamped or welded to the plate 8. A second annular weld spaced from the first may be provided.
