Abstract

1326117 Welding by fusion BELGONUCLEAIRE SA and CENTRE D'ETUDE DE L'ENERGIE NLCLEAIRE 5 Oct 1971 [9 Oct 1970] 46273/71 Heading B3R A process for initiating an arc in a welding process utilizing a non-consumable electrode in a helium gas atmosphere comprises adding to the helium for a short time period of the order of asecond or less, a minor quantity of an least one other gas which does not react with any of the materials present, such as argon, having an ionization potential lower than that of the helium. Preferably the minor quantity of gas is in proportion of between 5% and 20% and particularly 10% by volume to the helium. An arc welding apparatus utilizing this process when welding an end cap 3 on to a nuclear fuel rod or cladding 2 in a closed vessel 1, comprises a welding torch 6, non-consumable tungsten electrode and inert gas supply pipe 8. Branch pipes 11, 12 supply the main and auxiliary gases controlled by electro-valves 9, 10 respectively. A welding generator 15 of the type which includes an auxiliary generator for high frequency arc-initiation current is also provided. Rod 2 is held in a 'grip' 4 and a device 5 permits rotation of the rod. Vacuum pump 13 and gas outlet valve 14 which automatically closes when the pressure decreases, are also provided.
