Abstract
In the furnace production of carbon black from a high molecular weight aromatic hydrocarbon, an alkali metal hydroxide or salt is introduced into the furnace chamber upstream of the carbon black production zone in an amount of 0,00001 to 0,15 U.S. per gallon of hydrocarbon make. The hydrocarbon make has a mean molecular weight of 100-400, an aromatic content of 65-100%, and a "UOP characterization factor" of 9-10,9. Alkali metal salts specified are sodium chloride, triphosphate, tetraborate, and metasilicate, potassium iodide and thiocyanate, and caesium chloride. Sodium hydroxide may be used in an amount of 0,0001-0,05 lb. per gallon of hydrocarbon make. Potassium hydroxide may be used in an amount of 0,00001-0,03 lb. per gallon of hydrocarbon make. The combustion gases may be injected tangentially into the furnace chamber. The make hydrocarbon may be injected tangentially or radially with or without a fluidizing gas, e.g. steam. The make hydrocarbon may be mixed with pressurized water of a temperature above 100 DEG C. The alkali metal compound may be employed as a solution in water or oil. It may be introduced independently as an axial stream or together with the hydrocarbon make, fluidizing steam, or combustion gases. The make hydrocarbon may be preheated to a temperature of 200 DEG -700 DEG F. The carbon black may be produced at a temperature of 2200 DEG -3000 DEG F.
